Malone College Welcomes Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland
On Thursday 26th January Malone College hosted a visit from Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Mr Vernon Coaker MP. Mr Coaker MP and his political advisor Mr Conor McGinn who were accompanied by Baroness Mayblood and Mr Paul Caskey from The Integrated Education Fund, as well as Dr Alasdair McDonnell, MP and Mr Fergal McKinney from the SDLP, met with our Principal Mr. Price and Govenors, Giselle McKeown and Christine Harpur. Mr Price and Ms McKeown provided the Shadow Secretary with some insight into the history and context of Malone College before the party embarked on a tour of the School. Mr Coaker then took time to talk and listen to a group of Sixth Form students, who raised issues relevant to them, including our lack of sports facilities, the importance of integrated education, and the pressure they feel due to the increase in university fees. The party had lunch in the College library before Mr Coaker continued on his schedule. We welcomed the opportunity to host his visit and we hope everyone concerned enjoyed and benefitted from it. Danish Education Students |
Danish Education Students Visit Malone College 
On Thursday 19th January Malone College hosted a party of students from the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, along with their Professor, Maggi Lykke Larsen.The students were on a residential visit to Dublin and wanted to spend one day getting to know a little about Belfast, in particular, our schools. The party was welcomed by Mr. Price and Mrs. Moore, who knows Denmark well and was able to greet the party in their home language. Ms Lowery talked to the students about integrated education and how Malone College came into existence. After coffee, the group spent time with some of our Sixth Form students, where they discussed differences and similarities in schools here and in Denmark.The students then had a walk around the school and observed a range of lessons, including French, Geography, History and Art.We hope that everyone concerned enjoyed the experience, and look forward to future visits from our friends at Aarhus. Malone College Students Scoop Top Film Awards
Malone College students scooped top film awards in the annual Foyle Film Festival CCEA Moving Image Arts Showcase sponsored by City of Derry Crystal. A total of twenty-two films produced by A Level students for their 2011 GCE Moving Image Arts course were screened by Cinemagic at the Queen’s Film Theatre in Belfast and by the Foyle Film Festival at the Orchard Cinema in Derry on 1st and 2nd December. The screenings are an annual high point for Moving Image Arts students and this year saw over 350 teachers and students in attendance. The attractive cut glass awards were presented for four categories: Best AS Film, Best A2 Film, Best AS Animated Film and Best A2 Animated Film. Conor McCormick won the Best A2 Animated Film Award for his comic animation featuring a rabbit at war with an insurmountable carrot. Joel Somerville came third in the Best AS Film category with his modern adaptation of the tale of Hansel and Gretel. Malone College students continue to stretch their creative talents again this year, offering audiences an entertaining and inspiring visual treat. Introduced in 2004, Moving Image Arts is a CCEA Applied GCE A Level, offering a hands-on and creative approach to the teaching of moving image. Now also available at GCSE, Moving Image Arts gives students the opportunity to produce their own film portfolios, developing creativity, digital literacy and enterprise skills. A-Level Success at Malone |
A-Level Students Celebrated at Annual Presentation Ceremony
The success of our A Level students was celebrated at our annual Presentation Ceremony in November, where the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Mr. Niall Ó Donnghaile was Guest of Honour. David McKay received the Tracey Harpur Memorial Cup for Outstanding Achievement, as well as the award for the Top-performing Boy at A Level. David achieved A* in Politics and Business Studies and A in History. He is now studying for a degree in Politics and Philosophy at Queen’s University. Alexandra Chapman was Top-performing girl, achieving A* in Drama, A in Health and Social Care and B in History. Alex is currently undertaking a degree course in Social Policy at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown, with a view to a career in social work. Twenty-four students from last year’s Year 14 are now pursuing degree courses at universities around the country, while a further twenty-four are continuing their studies at Colleges of Further Education. Malone College Hospitality GCSE Students Awarded Top Marks in Northern Ireland
This year we received the exciting news that two of our GCSE Hospitality students had been awarded first and second place in Northern Ireland in their subject area. Jade Moore received the award for Top GCSE Candidate in Hospitality and her classmate, Amy-Lee Hammond came second. This is a wonderful achievement for the girls and we congratulate them on their success. We hope this is the first of many such achievements for our College community.
